Film: Harrison Ford Thinks Han Solo Should Have Died

After reading the LA Times’ interview with Gary Kurtz this summer, it wasn’t too surprising to hear Harrison Ford say that Han Solo should have been killed off. I did, however, find it a little surprising that he to hear him say he doesn’t think Han Solo is very interesting.

Geek rankings

Posted: August 27th, 2010 | Author: Tara | Filed under: Geek stuff | 10 Comments »

A co-worker and I have been having a debate about how to rank geeky activities. After reaching an impasse, I’d like to ask all four of you that read this blog.

From 1-5, with 1 being the least geeky and 5 being the geekiest, how would you rank the following list?

  • Magic: The Gathering
  • Dungeons & Dragons
  • LARPing
  • Warhammer
  • Cosplay

Leave your list in the comments. I’ll share my list after a few people have responded.

Books & Film: Zombie Beatles movie could be on its way

According to Deadline, the yet-to-be released novel Paul is Undead by Alan Goldsher has already been optioned by Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher at Double Feature.

Written as oral history, the book details how Lennon, a zombie guitarist in Liverpool, kills and reanimates McCartney, then does the same with Harrison and Starr. They create hits and bloody mayhem across the world, pursued by England’s greatest zombie hunter, Mick Jagger. They also engage in a battle with Eighth Level Ninja Lord Yoko Ono, and snack on the brains of swooning fans.

I’ll go see it. And in the meantime, there’s a book I’ll be pre-ordering.

College Humor nails it with RPG Heroes are Jerks (video)

RPGs are my favourite type of video games, so despite a tendency to play as good a character as possible, I’ve done my fair share of the kind of stuff seen in this video. So true, so funny.

Ian McKellen says The Hobbit is on its way

Sir Ian McKellen confirmed on his website that he’ll be reprising his role as Gandalf in Guillermo del Toro’s The Hobbit:
Sir Ian McKellen

THE HOBBIT’s, two films, start shooting in New Zealand in July. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth.

The director Guillermo del Toro is now living in Wellington, close to the Jacksons’ and the studio in Miramar.

We knew it was on its way, but it’s good to hear there’s some real movement happening.

For now, check out this clip of him teaching Ricky Gervais’ character about acting on Extras.

Looks like Diane Nelson may not have been telling the truth when she said a Christopher Nolan-helmed Superman was just a rumour.

Dear Apple, please don’t brick my Android phone

Posted: March 2nd, 2010 | Author: Tara | Filed under: Geek stuff | 2 Comments »

I just got a Motorola Milestone from Telus and I love it, so Apple’s lawsuit against HTC has me concerned. I hope the companies settle and quickly rather than letting it come to a ruling that leaves me with a pretty little brick.

According to the New York Times:

Jonathan Zittrain, a professor at Harvard Law School, outlines a similar case in his book “The Future of the Internet — and How to Stop It.” In 2004, TiVo sued the satellite TV distributor EchoStar, accusing the company of infringing on its patent on DVR technology. After some drawn-out litigation, TiVo ended up winning the case, and a Texas judge ordered EchoStar to disable the DVR functions on most of its set-top boxes. An appeals court is reviewing the matter.

“The judge simply ordered EchoStar to connect to the DVR boxes via the Web and destroy the functionality,” Mr. Zittrain told me in an interview. “Patent law is a completely different universe online. That means if the court were to side with Apple and issue an injunction that insists HTC kill the phone, or at least some of its functionality, they easily could.”

Given the clout of both of these companies, it’s unlikely it’ll come to actually bricking all Android phones but it’s still a scary thought.
