Geek rankings

Posted: August 27th, 2010 | Author: Tara | Filed under: Geek stuff | 10 Comments »

A co-worker and I have been having a debate about how to rank geeky activities. After reaching an impasse, I’d like to ask all four of you that read this blog.

From 1-5, with 1 being the least geeky and 5 being the geekiest, how would you rank the following list?

  • Magic: The Gathering
  • Dungeons & Dragons
  • LARPing
  • Warhammer
  • Cosplay

Leave your list in the comments. I’ll share my list after a few people have responded.

Yeah, I think that’s why we had so much back and forth about it, considering factors like hygiene and which ones women also take part in.

Cosplay is the one that throws the list off. That can be at such variable levels of geekiness.

    1.
Cosplay – least geeky because it involves social interaction and is based on Manga, which is cool.

    2.
LARPing – slightly more geeky due to reduction in input from Japan.

    3.
Warhammer – getting geekier, but one branch, I believe, involves paint which is not so geeky.

    4.
Magic: The Gathering – It was, apparently, based on math. Math is geeky. Cool, but very geeky.

    5.
Dungeons & Dragons – most geeky because Attacking the Darkness is true, more true than the people who still play it like to admit.

@Alec I agree. We had a good ordered figured out until the co-worker threw cosplay into the mix.

@James Seriously? I would have reversed the order, but with LARPing as the geekiest and cosplay as the second geekiest. Also, I’ve never attacked the darkness when playing D&D.

I think part of the problem is that your variables exist in a distinct Cartesian intersection of the nerd/geek axis with the nihon(nippon)phile/tolkienphile axis.

    Nihon(Nippon)
    |
    |
    |
    |
    Nerd —————————- Geek
    |
    |
    |
    |
    Tolkien

I would probably place them like so:

    Nihon(Nippon)
    C
    |
    |
    |
    |
    Nerd —-M—————W——- Geek
    |
    |
    |
    L | D
    Tolkien

    Addendum from the wife:

LARPing and Cosplay have nothing to do with being a nerd or a geek, both of which imply a level of social introversion. Whereas L is often due to the inability to relate to normal human beings, or any human beings, in a social setting and Cosplay more often falls into the realm of the extreme extrovert and does not really require any sort of geek credentials just the enjoyment of dressing up. This is why I cannot answer the question because I do not feel two of them are any measure of geekdom. Geeky implies being able to rattle off the entire timeline of Stargate (husband note: does that included the various time travel episodes?) or an inclination to pick out inaccurate items in Star Trek see the nerd/geek axis.

Hmm. That didn’t translate well. Put the Y axis in the center of the N/G line.
