Book review: The New Brighton Archeological Society, Book One (Mark Andrew Smith & Matthew Weldon)

I’m not going to lie. As the end of the first week of the 95 books challenge loomed larger and larger, I was feeling the pressure. Foolishly I chose a tome for my first book and wasn’t getting as far as I’d like or, to put it another way, I hadn’t finished a book yet. So that book was put aside for a few hours while I read the first (and currently only) volume of The New Brighton Archeological Society.
My gut response is that it’s the kind of graphic novel that makes me want to have kids just so I can read it with them. I have to agree with the review from AICN that in a time when we have graphic novels coming out that are clearly adult-only, it’s just what is needed to draw pre-teen readers into the medium.
There’s a lot packed into this first book. A group of kids who have recently lost their archeologist parents basically follow in their footsteps to discover a war between goblins and fairies, family intrigue and even a walking forest. There was also a reference to Peter Pan that made me laugh out loud. It’s a satisfying read and makes me hope the next volume will come out soon.
